"My lord Duke-Consort, don't underestimate the power of diplomacy," Tethys says, smiling with a quick flash of white teeth. "These pirates are a patched-together confederation. Who's to say we can't find the seams?"

She brushes a last slithering flake of ice off the device in her hands, pockets her multitool, and presses a few of the corroded buttons in a spirit of experimentation.

A holo opens of a creature in a beautiful purple robe perhaps and a mass of tentacles... it cocks its head and then the connection is cut.

"A good question," he agrees with a nod. "Maybe because blowing them up makes them less valuable as scrap? Perhaps because they expect to use survivors to demand ransoms? I'm not keen in either of those things happening?"

"What--?" Tethys hadn't been expecting anything much to result from her button-mashing. A less composed being might drop the communicator. Tethys, being herself, just... jiggles it from hand to hand once, not too dramatically.

She looks to the others. "You saw that too?" I hope? It would be a very strange sort of hallucination, even for a Jedi.

She presses the mystery buttons a few more times, wondering if the signal will come back.

I have the impression Gree are not a very commonly seen or well-known species, so most people might not recognize them? Hence, a roll.

"The being in the purple dress? Yes. Not a species I'm familiar with. Do you recognize them?"

"It... there's a species of sentients called the Gree--I think?--who have tentacles like that." Tethys frowns in thought. She isn't especially confident about that guess, which makes her all the more glad there's someone else nearby who also saw the transmission. At least she knows her own mind didn't invent the image out of whole cloth. "I've never seen one, though. They're very reclusive, I think, or it might be they're extinct..." she trails off, turning the comm over in her hands. "Unless it was something else, of course."

"Zhis makes zhings even more confusing," the General said.

"Well, it was a transmission because they cut it off at the other end. Do we know if any sensors are up? Maybe one of the probe droids caught the transmission and we can trace it back?"

A droid approached and said, “This unit was alerted that yellow parallels have made contact with gold intersectors, that is silver vertex, especially for yellow parallels.”

Zeno looks to the droid, thinks for a moment, then says, "I don't care if it's silver vertex, help us contact gold intersectors."

"Why is it, er, silver vertex, though?" Tethys asks the droid bemusedly (thus providing an unintentional textbook illustration of the different diplomatic approaches favored by Jedi and Sith).

"No," it said to Zeno and then to Tethys it added, "Yellow parallels currently not red vertical, yellow parallels green circular green secant. Gold intersectors pink vertex white vertical, yet yellow parallel are grey intersectors, this is black vertical."

"Oh." What else to say to that? It was certainly a comprehensive answer... if only she could understand any of it.

Tethys had heard about the strange droid that seemed to belong to the base, but it seems that, for a rarity, rumor had actually undersold the strangeness.

"Did--hmm. Did 'gold intersectors' leave this comm unit here?" She holds up the device. "I take it we weren't supposed to find it."

"Am I a yellow parallel?" Zeno asks. "Because I think I am. But what dies that make you?"

The droid nodded. It turned to Zeno and said, while pointing at each person present, "Yellow parallels."

"The gold intersectors..." Tethys raises the hand not holding the alien comm as if to rub her chin, then realizes she's currently wearing not-especially-clean-right-now insulated armor gloves and stops short. "They're a species of organic beings, grayish skin, tentacle limbs? Are they here, on Hoth?"

Remmington nods after the sudden appearance of the Gree on the holo. With the appearance of C5-PT, it is safe to assume that they had set up this base. "I saw." He answers Tethys' question but for the moment remains quiet and watches and listens.

The droid does not answer.

"Is it silver vertex for us to know about the golden intersectors?" Zeno asks.

"Gold intersectors are verdant perpendicular of yellow parallels," the droid responded.

He looks to the others. "Can we scan that thing to figure out the tech? These gold intersectors might be... alien to the Republic or Empire. Possibly to the galaxy? Possibly even scan or disassemble the droid to see how it works?"

The General nodded in agreement.

C5-PT verbalized, "This unit is green bilateral, no red perpendicular even if verdant radial that will not generate black vertical, only pink vertex in gold intersectors."

"Yeah, see, it understands basic which means that it is either being intentionally obtuse or it has been programmed with modification to its vocabulary or voice modulator. Inspecting and modifying it's droid brain should help us make sense of the situation."

He looks at the droid with a wicked smile. "You don't mind if we cut open your brain right? Or do you have a means of interpreting more clearly so we don't have to?"

The droid did not seem like it would comply.
