[Day 1 - EM] Unto Death

Posted: Thu Aug 11, 2022 8:55 pm
by Darth Baras
Darth Baras stood on the bridge of the Empress’ Spear as it dropped from hyperspace. The transition was smooth, or as smooth as any transition from hyperspace should be. They were under impulse power and sensors did not register any hits yet. Below was Hoth, white with striations of blue.

Then a communication officer barked out, “My Lord, we have… yes… a Republic vessel just translated from hyperspace.”

The Captain responded, “Battle stations, this is an ambush!”

Darth Baras frowned but said nothing as sensors started picking up more and more hits from the dark side of the planet and closing fast. A swarm of fighters, they were attacking both the Empire and Republic… a bold if crazy strategy surely these pirates…

“Hyperdrive offline… sustaining damage…” another crewman responded.

The Captain said, “Impossible!”

Lightning arced out from Darth Baras and the Captain was now a burnt wreck of meat and bones. He said calmly, “XO, you now have command, delaying action. Do your duty unto Death, begin evacuations.”

The new Captain nodded and said, “Get my firing resolutions, no one leaves their post!”

Another voice, “I am getting an Imperial distress beacon from the surface.”

Darth Baras said, “That is our target, either it is a trap or it isn’t but it is better than here. Captain, continue.”

The Sith Lord departed as the Captain frowned and said, “Target the command ship, all engines to full if we must die for the Empress we do so on our terms. For the EMPIRE!”

Event Type: Main
Participants: Imperial and Unaligned
Timeslots: Early Morning

Description: The ship is being boarded and although the pirates are not better trained they are tenacious and backed by powerful droids that are proving difficult to deal with. Alarm klaxons are blaring and all hands if they can need to find their way to the emergency pods or to their ships and make for the surface while interceptors attempt a delaying action.

The ship is lost, but with luck the mission can continue on the ground. There is an emergency beacon to follow but also a blizzard in that region of Hoth, so any travel by vehicle or foot will be perilous and dangerous.

Rules: Getting to the surface can be done via life pods or via a personal ship.

Escape via Life Pod: The player can make one of two rolls they can try and use their knowledge of terrain and the minor directional thruster to navigate towards the beacon and land on target through the storm or brace for impact; they cannot do both.
  • Navigate: They can make an Astrogation or Survival check at Hard difficulty with two setback due to the blizzard conditions (3 purple dice and 2 black dice) and land at Echo Base in the next time slot, otherwise they land in the Icy Wastes and suffer 5 wounds, not soakable, and a critical injury for the hard landing.
  • Brace for Impact: Make an Average Resilience or Coordination check (2 purple dice), but they are lost in the Icy Wastes. If they fail the roll they suffer 5 wounds, can be soaked, and a Critical Injury if the damage is not soaked.
Escape via a Ship: The pilot, co-pilot can assist, makes a roll for the ship this is a Hard (3 purple dice) Piloting Space check with two setback due to the weather conditions. If the roll is failed the crew must make a Resilience or Coordination check at Hard (3 purple dice) difficulty or suffer 5 wounds, not soakable and a critical Injury. They are also lost in the Icy Wastes. If the roll succeeds, they land at Echo Base in the next time slot. The ship does not get through unscathed, it suffers 5 hull trauma damage and 5 system strain; if the roll is failed it also suffers a Critical Hit. Armor applies.

Rewards/Outcome: The players either land in the Icy Wastes or Echo Base.

Luth bolted through the halls over the ship. Everyone was in danger, especially her friend and his daughter. She didn't spend as much time as she had shielding her friends from at least one source of danger just to lose one of them in a ship crash. Fortunately, Shyyyo appeared to be waiting already, the door of the Nighthawk open. Luth didn't even hesitate, running inside and straight to the cockpit.

She jerked a thumb at the co-pilot's seat for Shyyyo and one of the passenger seats for his daughter. "Strap in and brace yourselves. This is gonna be an adventure." The ship lifted off as a loud crash and an explosion sounded behind her. She couldn't afford to check visual to see what had happened. Their only concern was getting planetside. Keeping everyone safe. She gripped the controls, teeth gritted as she watched the sensor array like a hawk.

"Syl, I need a good trajector- agh!" The ship shook around them as they were winged by a bolt of energy as soon as the craft left the hangar. Fortunately, he'd gotten the message, despite the shuddering of the bulkheads around them. A trajectory for reaching the signal and landing displayed itself before her and she followed it like a beacon in the darkness, swerving the ship around fighters, debris from Empire, Republic, and pirate ships alike, and when they reached atmosphere, fought the weather trying to batter them out into the trackless ice.

None of it brought them down. She wouldn't let it.

She only released her white-knuckled grip when they finally touched down at the base, trying not to shake. They were safe. For now.

Remmington is nearly thrown off his feet as the Empress' Spear starts taking hits that rock the ship. He rushes back to the hangar and jumps into the co-pilot seat of the Skidbladnir. "Verandi, emergency take off. Everyone, into your seats and brace yourselves."

The ships starts to lift off as parts start to fall from the ceiling but they luckily just bounce off the shields. The ship turns and exits the hangar. They somehow manage to pass the pirates that are busy attacking the capital ships.

"Detecting Imperial distress signal. Setting coordinates, Verandi take us down." He passes on the orders.

The icy winds of snow around Hoth batter the ship but they somehow manage to break through the storm and locate Echo Base.

"Whew. We made it somehow." Remmington lets out a sigh of relief as he sinks into his seat.

Crash-landing in the wilderness? That was bringing back memories! Moyr almost laughed at the ironies when she was rushing through controls to get the Bitch out of the hangar. The way Hoth had greeted them foretold an eventful stay, but she in fact expected no less.

Weather conditions readouts were discouraging from any overland trips, however. It wouldn't be like on Korriban or Yavin. Twi'lek preference for hotter climates played a part in her determination to get to where the signal was. She was a seasoned pilot, and with a bit of extra juice the Force could grant...

Once Razzya gave signal that the hatch had been sealed, the Bitch darted toward the surface, into the blizzard, leaving the burning husk of their mother ship behind. Registering similar fate being met by the Republic, Moyr considered the consequences for a moment before she had to swirl among the incoming shots. She sharpened her focus through the lens of the Force, accepted the toll it took on her body, and let her instincts do the rest as the icy clouds engulfed them.

Aphr had woken up not long before the chaos began. Still trying to digest the latest dream and updating her datapad when sirens started blaring and she was thrown from her chair by the attack.

"Get to your seats!" Aphr called out, checking on Zhorrid and then heading to the pilot seat. Looking back and seeing Zhorrid had followed thankfully, she got the ship off the ground quickly, not needing to explain to her master what to do. Also not trying to panic as while she had done some gentle flying this was not gentle flying!!

However, she came through without any damage, unlike the poor ship. Looking ahead at both the planet and the landing zone with interest.

I knew this wasn't going to be easy...

by Jo'ren Rath
Jo'ren watched as they emerged from hyperspace into the ambush he had predicted. There was a long sigh as he raised the communicator: "Commander. Prep the ship for launch, I'm on my way."

As he walked purposefully through the ship there were occasional flurries of activity as people ran to escape pods or troopers ran towards the sound of combat. It was then that he felt a strangely familiar presence. Something he had not sensed since...the Jedi Temple. There was a knot of fear, anger, and quite frankly madness coming towards him.

"Avi? What are you doing... Never mind, we're getting of this ship. Come on." With his old comrade in tow they made it to Terror Star and blasted off.

As space combat swirled around them he headed for the distress beacon on the surface. Unfortunately the weather was appalling. As they zoomed in closer there was an almighty slam as the ship caught the edge of a rock outcrop! Red light bathed the cockpit.

"At least the droids replaced the filter... Damage report!" The hyperdrive was damaged and would need repairs, could have been worse. A gap in the clouds suddenly opened up and he spotted a cave entrance down below.

"Okay, I'm setting her down. Looks like there's shelter right there. Hope you packed warm old friend." He eased the ship into the cave as the blizzard started up again...

Still surprised that Jo'Ren had been on the same ship as him for a week without ever noticing, this Force Disturbance really could go do one if it was clouding his senses that badly, Avi had strapped in for the de-orbit.

Hadn't he?

He hadn't. Not properly.

"Warm?" he said, picking himself out of the storage locker by throwing everything aside. "I'm positively toasty."

There was a brief flicker as he instinctively put the Force to use.
